The Artist & the Work

Bio

Dennis Maloney is a painter based in northern Indiana. Before dedicating himself to painting, he spent more than twenty years as a professional welder and served in the U.S. Army. He studied at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where he became well versed in sculptural materials and techniques. The discipline of that background, with its emphasis on structure, materials, and precision, continues to inform his approach to painting.

In 2021 Maloney began a serious investigation of two-dimensional media, first through the landscape of New Mexico and now through the shifting terrain of the Midwest and Great Lakes region. His work is best described as adaptive expressionism, an approach shaped by sensitivity to intensity, material, and the forms of mark-making best suited to each painting’s energy. Across his landscapes, changing weather and light continually transform familiar places into renewed experiences of presence and expression.

Statement

My work offers an invitation to reconnect with oneself. Through quiet landscapes, I create spaces that feel intimate, reflective, and emotionally safe. These are not confrontational subjects, but places where distance from the noise of other people allows for a closer encounter with one’s inner life. Working through a multidisciplinary practice, I take an adaptive approach to expression, with intensity, material adaptation, and mark-making central to the work. I use acrylic paint, ink, oil paint, and watercolor on wood panel, stretched canvas, linen, and paper, with marks made by palette knife, pen, marker, and brush.
